Headaches
Headaches are one of the most common medical complaints, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. While most headaches are temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter medications, chronic or severe headaches can significantly disrupt daily life, leading to missed work, reduced productivity, and a diminished quality of life. At the Interventional Pain and Rehab Center, we specialize in diagnosing and treating various types of headaches, offering personalized treatment plans to help you find relief and improve your overall well-being.
What Causes Headaches?
Headaches can occur for a wide range of reasons, and they are typically categorized into two main types: primary and secondary headaches.
1. Primary Headaches
Primary headaches are not caused by an underlying medical condition but are the condition themselves. The most common types of primary headaches include:
- Tension Headaches: These are the most common type of headache, often described as a dull, constant pressure or tightness around the forehead or back of the head. Tension headaches are typically caused by stress, poor posture, muscle strain, or anxiety.
- Migraines: Migraines are intense, throbbing headaches that often affect one side of the head. They are typically accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, and visual disturbances (aura). Migraines can be triggered by factors like hormonal changes, certain foods, stress, sleep disturbances, or environmental changes.
Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches are extremely painful headaches that occur in cyclical patterns or “clusters,” often around one eye. They tend to occur at night and are characterized by intense, sharp pain, usually on one side of the head, along with symptoms like redness in the eye, nasal congestion, or tearing.

2. Secondary Headaches
Secondary headaches are caused by an underlying medical condition or external factor. Some common causes of secondary headaches include:
- Sinus Headaches: These are caused by inflammation or infection of the sinuses, leading to pressure and pain around the forehead, eyes, and cheeks.
- Medication Overuse Headaches: Also known as rebound headaches, these occur when pain-relieving medications are taken too frequently. Overuse of analgesics or migraine medications can actually lead to more frequent and intense headaches.
- Head/Neck Injuries or Concussions: A blow to the head or neck can lead to headaches, which may persist for a period of time after the injury.
- Infections: Conditions like meningitis or encephalitis, which cause inflammation in the brain, can result in severe headaches.
- Other Medical Conditions: High blood pressure, brain tumors, or vascular issues can also cause secondary headaches, although these are less common.
When to Seek Help for Headaches
Most headaches can be managed with self-care and over-the-counter treatments, but there are certain warning signs that require professional attention. Seek medical help if:
- You experience sudden, severe headaches or a headache that feels “different” from your usual pattern.
- Your headaches are accompanied by neurological symptoms, such as weakness, confusion, difficulty speaking, or loss of vision.
- Headaches are associated with a fever, stiff neck, or rash.
- You are experiencing frequent headaches that interfere with daily activities.
- Medication is not providing adequate relief or you are taking pain medications regularly.
At the Interventional Pain and Rehab Center, our expert team of specialists is trained to evaluate and treat all types of headaches, from occasional tension headaches to chronic migraines, ensuring you get the right care for your specific needs.
